Surviving North Korea: One Woman’s Story of Escape from Communist Tyranny

Share this edition:

This is the extraordinary story of Young (Choi Geum-hyeong), who escaped North Korea after enduring forced labour, watching public executions as a child, famine and decades of communist oppression.

November 7 marks Victims of Communism Day, remembering the estimated 100 million deaths that have occurred under the tyranny of communist rule.

After fleeing across the frozen Tumen River with her family, spending four years in hiding in China and eventually reaching freedom, Young resettled in Australia. Today, she shares her story to expose the brutal reality of life under communism, and to warn younger generations against an ideology that promises equality but delivers tyranny and suffering.

Her powerful message is simple: freedom must never be taken for granted, and the victims of communism must never be forgotten.
