The Australian National Flag is and always was a product of the community. Young soldiers took the flag to the battlefields of the Great War, and civilians adopted the flag for their private use despite official ambiguity as to whether it was even allowed.
In contrast, more recent attempts to change or replace that flag have been top down and led by unrepresentative elites. It is based on falsehood – that the flag is no longer capable of representing all Australia, and that the Australian Flag is a symbol of oppression.
The Australian National Flag represents all Australians. The Union Jack represents the institutions that we all share and connect us all – the Crown, the rule of law developed through centuries of development in English common law, and Westminster parliamentary representative government. The Federation Star represents each of the states; the coming together of disparate people under a united vision of Australia’s future. The Southern Cross represents our place in the world – that Australia is not merely an idea but is tethered to a real place which brings together the people that are born here and the people who choose to call it home. The national flag is a symbol of Australia’s shared history and the shared destiny we all have – that we are all in this together and there is more that unites us than divides. This is why the Australian National Flag is the only flag for Australia.
