“One Nation’s migration policy offers the chance of a genuine reset to Australia’s broken and corrupt migration system, which is benefitting the special interests and political establishment at the expense of mainstream Australians,” said Daniel Wild, Deputy Executive Director at the Institute of Public Affairs.
Today, One Nation released its immigration policy aimed at slashing immigration by 750,000 over a three-year period.
- Student and graduate visa holders, as well as illegal immigrants, will be the most affected, with a combined total of more than half a million individuals, about 72 per cent of the targeted cut.
- In the first three years, net overseas migration (NOM) will be negative.
- Following the first three years of negative NOM, One Nation will place a NOM cap of positive 130,000 per annum.
“The three-year negative net overseas migration intake is a necessary period of adjustment after record-breaking migration since the end of the pandemic,” said Mr Wild.
“A massive migration cut will not trigger a recession, as Australia is already in a per capita recession. Instead, cutting migration will boost living standards and ease infrastructure pressures as the Canadian experience demonstrates.”
“Too many political leaders and policymakers have taken the lazy path of using a larger population to increase the size of the economy on paper, while ignoring the effect on economic productivity, per capita economic growth, and congestion and overcrowding in Australia’s largest cities.”
Recent IPA analysis of ABS regional population data from the financial years ending 2023 and 2025 (inclusive) shows roughly 86 per cent settled in Australia’s capital cities. About 55 per cent settled in just Sydney and Melbourne alone.
“Australia is bursting at the seams, and urgent corrective action is needed to restore balance to our migration system and ensure that the values and preferences of Australians are put first,” said Mr Wild.
