Below is a transcript of the interview.

Mike Amor:

Dozens of kindergartens across Melbourne have cancelled Mother’s and Father’s Day in an effort to be more inclusive. Instead, they’ll be hosting a family day in a controversial move that’s left parents fuming.

Bethan Yeoman:

They’re supposed to be two days of gratitude, acknowledging the hard work of mothers and fathers.

Mother:

An opportunity to celebrate.

Bethan Yeoman:

But just three hours after school closed for the year, parents at St. Helena Preschool in Eltham North were told by management at ECMS that from now on we won’t be holding titled celebrations like Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. Instead, we will have a fabulous Family Day celebration.

Kieran Kearney:

This isn’t just a micro issue, this is recognising that family means different things to different people in different communities.

Bethan Yeoman:

7NEWS understands the majority of parents don’t support the change.

Bella d’Abrera:

Well, that is actually the problem with this kind of woke activism, that it always… Well, it tries to be inclusive. It ends up actually excluding the majority of the population, so I can understand why the parents are upset.

Bethan Yeoman:

ECMS runs 69 private centres across Melbourne, the change applies to more than half of them.

Father:

No, I reckon that’s a bit ridiculous. Taking political correctness too far, mate.

Bella d’Abrera:

There should be no place in Australian kindergartens for the politicisation of toddlers and infants.

Bethan Yeoman:

Parents have told 7NEWS they were blindsided by the letter. They say there was no consultation and the organisation has ignored their email. ECMS refutes this.

Kieran Kearney:

Change is hard for everyone and we find change hard too, so it can be difficult for some people to accept that change.

Bethan Yeoman:

Bethan Yeoman, 7NEWS.
