Australia’s foremost think-tank focused on the economic and social freedoms of Australians, the Institute of Public Affairs, welcomes Adam Creighton as a Senior Fellow and Chief Economist.

IPA Executive Director, Scott Hargreaves, said Mr Creighton’s most recent experience as Washington correspondent for The Australian would be invaluable, as the USA looks to deregulate and grow the economy while Australia continues to follow Europe’s path of increasing regulation and stagnation.

“Australia is at an economic crossroads. With an unprecedented seven consecutive quarters of per capita GDP decline, Australians are in a personal recession like never before, at the same time as an inflation induced cost-of-living and housing affordability crisis,” said Mr Hargreaves.

Adam Creighton is an award-winning journalist who holds a Bachelor of Economics with First Class Honours from the University of New South Wales, and Master of Philosophy in Economics from Balliol College, Oxford who will bring a new edge to the IPA’s economic research.

“I have had a long and beneficial association with the IPA, so joining the organisation at a senior level felt like a logical next step to me,” said Mr Creighton.

“With the rapid decline in Australians’ standard of living, and as the economic windfall from China beings to dissipate, the IPA will have a critical role in promoting sound policy and I am looking forward to contributing to the national discussion on how best to stop and reverse this trend.”

Having started his career at the Reserve Bank of Australia, Adam has been at the forefront of economic debate having written for The Economist and The Wall Street Journal, as well as The Australian as Economics Editor and Washington correspondent.

“Over the past four decades there has been a profound shift in the foundations of the Australian economy from sustainable, productivity-led growth to population-led growth. This has been coupled with an unprecedented over-reliance on taxpayer and debt funded government spending,” said Mr Hargreaves.

“In a federal election year, with governments at all levels mired in record and increasing levels of debt, with spending reverting back to emergency pandemic levels that is driving inflation, and economic growth stagnate, Adam’s contribution to the debate will be vital.”
