Documenting community opposition to Australia’s reckless renewable energy rollout

Across Australia, communities are standing up against the destructive consequences of net zero policies and the forced rollout of large-scale wind, solar, battery, and transmission projects. While inner-city elites and politicians push ahead with their ideological energy agenda, mainstream Australians are pushing back.

The IPA Renewables Rejection Database is a national record of over 150 community-led rejections of renewable energy projects since 2008. It highlights a growing grassroots movement of Australians who reject the imposition of these projects upon them.

Australia once had some of the cheapest electricity in the industrialised world whilst now it has some of the most expensive. Decades of poor decision making, based on flawed and misleading advice and ideology, is crushing the most productive sectors of our economy.

This database exists to give mainstream Australians a voice. It shows that opposition to net zero is not isolated or fringe – it is national, organised, and growing.

Ark Energy, which was behind a bid to build a 55-turbine Doughboy Wind Farm, 50 kilometres east of Armidale, said in a statement last month the decision to withdraw the project was made “following a change of mind” from some of the nine landowners whose properties took in the project’s boundaries. “Ark Energy maintains that the site, located within the NSW New England Renewable Energy Zone, is an excellent location for wind energy generation, and may reconsider the project with a different design at a later date, and pending further consultation,” the statement read. Wagga Wagga City Council has voted to strengthen policies to protect prime agricultural land from renewable energy projects. At a recent meeting councillors directed council staff to prepare a report by next month on how to reform planning laws in relation to these developments. 2025	03/08/2025	VIC	Meadow Creek	Both Australian Energy Infrastructure Commissioner Tony Mahar and pro-renewables independent MP Helen Haines have written to Victorian Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny, urging her to establish an advisory committee to deliberate over a proposal for what would be one of Australia’s largest solar farms in the northeast of the state. But the decision hasn’t come without controversy – more than 50 public objections forced the project to independent assessment rather than departmental approval. 2025	01/08/2025	VIC	Tatyoon	Tatyoon residents are waiting for a new map of the proposed Ballyrogan Wind Farm, and in the meantime have created one of their own. The Ballyrogan and Tatyoon Community Alliance have built a map of landowners surrounding the planned wind farm area who oppose the project, with more than 100 families included, and have called for the map to be tabled at developer Squadron Energy’s next meeting. The project, located approximately 10km south of Ararat, has faced fierce community opposition since being announced, and has been revised from 164 turbines down to approximately 120 since July. 2025	09/10/2025	VIC	Shady Creek	Samsung C&T SREA is proposing to build a 200MW BESS facility in the Darnum-Shady Creek area of West Gippsland. The area is renowed for it's high quality agricultural farmland, with potatoes, beef and large scale dairy operations all co-existing in the fertile ground and reliable rainfall area. The local community has overwhelming rejected the proposal from Samsung. In addition to correspondence with the Victorian Government, Council also intends to write to operators Samsung and Zen expressing opposition to proposed BESS locations, and believes that many areas of the Shire such as Shady Creek, Darnum and Yarragon are inappropriate locations. East of Wycheproof, The government agency is seeking access to 29 properties to conduct environmental surveys before the construction of the VNI West transmission line. In recent weeks, it wrote to property owners informing them it needed access and would use powers under the Electricity Industry Act to gain entry if consent was not given. Groups of more than 50 farmers blocked them. Eventually, the VicGrid employees left without getting onto the land. North East of Stawell, The state agency had sought to enter 29 properties to carry out environmental assessments ahead of the proposed VNI West transmission project. In recent weeks, landowners received notices stating that VicGrid intended to access their land and would rely on provisions of the Electricity Industry Act if permission was withheld. Farmers responded by banding together to physically prevent staff from entering. Faced with the resistance, VicGrid personnel ultimately withdrew without setting foot on the properties.
