John Deller

John Deller is the National Manager, Government Affairs at the Institute of Public Affairs

John brings more than 20 years of experience at senior levels of government in key positions across a range of federal and state parliaments.

Prior to joining the IPA in July 2025, John was Senior Adviser to the Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, when relations with the new Trump Administration rapidly were (and remain) dominant.  The attacks on Israel and antisemitism at home were also priority issues for policy response.  John worked in the Communications portfolio when proposed misinformation laws, media industry, online security and gambling advertising were also central areas of debate.

John was Chief of Staff to the Ministers for Defence Industry, Industry, and Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs.  The priorities were around support for Australian defence capability, local industry, and efforts to strengthen visa and citizenship laws.  John also brings wide experience from working with Ministers in the Victorian, South Australian and Northern Territory Governments.

Prior to his work in parliamentary arenas, John was a journalist in television and radio news.  He holds a Masters in Public Policy from Flinders University in Adelaide.
