The Public’s Fury At Being Told What To Do And Think Has Exploded With The Folau Fiasco

Trust the perennially sanctimonious Kerryn Phelps to capture in a couple of sentences why the Israel Folau saga has resonated with so many. The one-time MP took to Twitter on Tuesday to share her thoughts on the matter. ‘The haters and homophobes have been waiting since the YES vote for a trigger to set off a “religious freedoms” campaign as

Inquiry Into Press Freedom Must Include Freedom Of Speech For All Australians

“An inquiry into press freedom must include laws which infringe on the freedom of speech of all Australians, such as Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act,” said Gideon Rozner, Director of Policy at free-market think tank the Institute of Public Affairs. The Institute of Public Affairs today announced its support for an independent inquiry into press freedom, in response

The Higher Pay Paradox

In Australia, nothing is certain except death, taxes and increases to the minimum wage. And while understandably welcome news for workers, each wage hike tightens the noose around the necks of small business and millions of Australian job-seekers. Minimum wage cases have become a Groundhog Day-like ritual. Every year, the Australian Council of Trade Unions demands an unreasonably high increase,

Another Blow For Job-Seekers

“Like death and taxes, we can always count on a yearly minimum wage hike,” said Gideon Rozner, Director of Policy at the free market think tank Institute of Public Affairs. “Minimum wage decisions are predictable. The Australian Council of Trade Unions makes an ambit claim – in this case 6 per cent – and employer groups make a low-ball offer

Labor’s New Threat To Freedom Of Speech

Free Market think tank the Institute of Public Affairs has criticised a proposal from Mark Dreyfus, the Federal Labor shadow attorney-general, that if elected a Labor government would ‘beef up’ the enforcement of Section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act by increasing the funding of the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC).  “Not only does the AHRC preside over divisive and

Peter Ridd Wins Biggest Victory On Free Speech In A Generation

The Institute of Public Affairs has today welcomed the historic judgement in the case of Peter Ridd vs James Cook University (JCU) with Judge Vasta finding that Peter Ridd was wrongly dismissed by JCU. “This judgement should rightly send shockwaves through Australian universities regarding their commitment to academic freedom and how they deal with academics who hold a contrary view

Peter Ridd Court Hearings Highlight Free Speech Crisis At Universities

“The court hearings of the case of Peter Ridd vs James Cook University (JCU) have now concluded and we await judgment. What the case has identified is a culture of censorship when it comes to challenging claims surrounding climate change and the Great Barrier Reef,” said Gideon Rozner, Director of Policy at the free market think tank the Institute of

Let’s Not Forfeit Our Own Freedoms In The Rush To Silence Terrorists

American founding father Benjamin Franklin once wrote: “Any society that would give up essential liberty to obtain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.” Since September 11, 2001, it’s a trade-off with which we are increasingly familiar. The Christchurch attacks were senseless acts of terror that reverberated around the world, but we need to be wary of knee-jerk

Attacks On Our Freedoms Should Not Be Met With Further Attacks On Our Freedoms

The Institute of Public Affairs has today rejected Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s proposal for more government regulation and control of social media and the internet. “Open-ended calls for censorship of internet content represent an attack on freedom of speech. Such proposals must be strongly opposed,” said Gideon Rozner, Director of Policy at the IPA. “The events in Christchurch last Friday

Bad Riddance

When the Left talks derisively about ‘climate deniers’, they probably imagine someone very different from Dr Peter Ridd. Bearded, bespectacled and softly-spoken, Ridd is a sandal-wearing one-time Green voter and former president of his local chapter of the Wildlife Protection Society. He is also a marine geophysicist who has been studying the Great Barrier Reef for over 35 years. And
