Government Digital Platforms Response A Major Threat To Free Speech

Free market think tank the Institute of Public Affairs has condemned the Morrison Government’s response to the ACCC digital platforms as a disgraceful attack on free speech. “That the same Coalition who rightly thought in 2013 that having a public interest media advocate run the ruler over the media was an attack on free speech, now believes Canberra bureaucrats should

A Fake Assault On ‘Fake News’: Government’s Intervention Is As Chilling As It Is Insulting

The Morrison government bills its proposed digital platform reforms, announced on Thursday, as “world-leading”. That may be true, in the same way that China’s “Great Firewall” – a tool of authoritarian suppression – was “world-leading” when it began in the 1990s. If that comparison seems dramatic, it is meant to be. The government’s ham-fisted measures have absolutely no place in

Haunted By The Miserable Ghost

I still think back to that night in mid-May this year: scrutineering in some far-flung warehouse in suburban Melbourne, running down my phone battery to check seat-by-seat results, as it dawned on us that – seemingly against the laws of political gravity – Scott Morrison had pulled it off. Nobody had loathed Morrison’s predecessor more than I had, but even

Let’s Be An Open, Modern Society Without Trashing Our Heritage

For a political party that preaches tolerance, the Greens never miss an opportunity to take a whack at Australia’s roughly 12 million Christians. So it was this week, when the NSW Greens took aim at the humble Lord’s Prayer, with a motion to scrap it in the state upper house. For those unfamiliar with the finer points of parliamentary procedure,

Aunty Complains About A Lack Of Alternative Views? That’s A Bit Rich

Media Watch is everything that is wrong with the ABC, squeezed into 15 insufferable minutes. Smug, elitist and, above all, awash with the misguided idea that commercial media outlets are not to be trusted and that the only place where honest news can be found is in Aunty’s warm, state-sponsored embrace. The program is usually best ignored, but its segment

Why Won’t The Left Admit: Their War On Alan Jones Is A War On Dissenting Opinion

The woke lynch mob has been busy recently, ramping up their perennial crusade to blackball centre-right voices in the media. For the past fortnight, the target has been their white whale: Veteran broadcaster Alan Jones. Jones came under fire for a spray against Jacinda Ardern which was, effectively, a mangling of the old advice to ‘put a sock in it’.
